In Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa, the responsibility of education is shared between the federal, state and local governments. The Federal Ministry of Education regulates and ensures its quality. The country requires nine years of mandatory education, six years of primary and three years of junior secondary. Primary school is free, and one of its major aims is student literacy. In order to be successful in junior secondary school, students must complete the Junior Secondary Certification Exam is six subjects. Senior secondary offers both an academic and vocational track. At the end, students are required to take the Senior Secondary Certification Exam to obtain the Senior Secondary Certificate. In order to take the University Tertiary Matriculation Exam and go on to higher education, students need to get at least a C in English and four other subjects.
Bringing Up Literacy Rates
Sadly, Nigeria faces low enrolment rates, so even though a lot of emphasis is placed on literacy in elementary school, the number of illiterate people in the country is quite high. Part of our online education program focuses on English literacy. Students have access to eLearning courses that follow their current lessons. For review, they can go back into older lessons to go over unclear subject matter, giving them the chance to really understand the material.
Literacy is an important factor in success. Thirty days of our free online classes will show that this crucial skill is easily attainable.

"Before we started on the program, there were many times in the class that I didn’t know the answer. I never wanted to be picked by the teacher to answer a question either because I was simply afraid of being embarrassed in front of the other kids, so I would always be looking down when the teacher asked a question. Now it is different! I want to be picked because I do know the answer. I don’t show off or anything, but when the teacher does ask a question I now put my hand up and I can now look her straight in the eye and it makes me feel great! I am 15 years of age and it gives me fantastic confidence to want to do better all the time. Thank you FutureSchool and I would appreciate you doing something in Science, too."
